A Lasting Tribute: The Tom Swale Memorial Walkway

Honoring a Community Hero

On May 30, 2018, Puerto Vallarta lost a beloved neighbor and leader. Tom Swale, past president of the Amapas Neighborhood Association (ANA), passed away peacefully in California after complications from heart surgery. He left behind a powerful legacy of community service, kindness, and action. Tom was known as “Mr. Amapas” because he always put his heart into making our neighborhood safer, cleaner, and stronger. Today, his work still surrounds us – from well-kept sidewalks to trash bins, stairways, and quiet, welcoming streets.

A Dream Turned into Action

One of Tom’s greatest hopes was to create a safe walkway along the busy highway in Amapas. This road was dangerous for pedestrians, and he knew a better path could protect residents, workers, and visitors alike. To honor his vision and memory, the community joined forces to build the Tom Swale Memorial Walkway. This safe, beautiful path now serves everyone who travels this route on foot.

More Than a Walkway

This project isn’t just about safety. It’s a tribute to someone who truly cared. A local stone retaining wall supports the walkway, blending naturally into the hillside. A plaque honors Tom’s contributions, reminding everyone of his love for the neighborhood. Native plants and solar lighting were added to reflect Tom’s respect for nature and to make the path usable day and night. This peaceful stretch of walkway is now a place where people can connect, reflect, and move safely through the community.

Built by the Community, For the Community

Construction on the walkway began in early 2019 and was completed by December that year. The project was made possible by neighbors, friends, and supporters who donated their time, skills, and money. It’s a perfect example of what Tom believed in: people coming together to make life better for everyone. Whether you live here full-time, visit seasonally, or simply share Tom’s passion for Puerto Vallarta, your involvement helped build more than just a sidewalk – it helped build community.

Keep the Spirit Alive

Tom believed that strong neighborhoods are made one project at a time, and one caring act at a time. The Tom Swale Memorial Walkway is a symbol of that belief. It is a safe, green, and thoughtful space built with love. As you walk along this path, take a moment to remember Tom’s generous spirit. And if you’re inspired to keep his legacy going, please reach out, volunteer, or lend a hand, just like Tom would have.
