The Drag Derby: A Colorful Pride Tradition in Vallarta
June, 2019

Where Celebration Meets Community

Every year during Vallarta Pride, the city comes alive with color, music, and celebration. One of the most exciting events of the week is the Drag Derby, also known as the “Annual Running of the Drag Queens.” It’s not just a race, it’s a spectacle of talent, humor, and fabulous fashion. Imagine dozens of drag queens racing down cobblestone streets in towering heels, glittering outfits, and sky-high wigs, all while hundreds of people cheer them on.
More Than Just a Show
For many years, the Amapas Neighborhood Association (ANA) organized this event. ANA saw the Drag Derby as more than entertainment. It was a way to unite the community, celebrate diversity, and promote acceptance for everyone. The queens competed in hilarious challenges: balancing objects on their heads, dancing mid-race, and performing quick costume changes. It was part obstacle course, part pageant, and part comedy show; and the crowd loved every second.
Supporting LGBTQ+ Lives
But behind all the laughs and sequins, the Drag Derby had a deeper purpose. It raised money to support LGBTQ+ programs in Puerto Vallarta, things like health education, counseling, and advocacy services. When you bought a ticket or dropped a few pesos in the donation bucket, you weren’t just supporting the event, you were helping real people in the local LGBTQ+ community. That’s what made the Derby truly special.
A New Chapter Begins
In 2019, the event took a new turn when SETAC, a local LGBTQ+ organization, took over organizing the Drag Derby. While some were sad to see ANA pass the torch, the transition brought fresh ideas and energy to the event. Change is never easy, especially when it involves something you love. But both ANA and SETAC shared the same goal: to uplift, protect, and celebrate Puerto Vallarta’s LGBTQ+ residents and visitors.
Keeping the Spirit Alive
The queens continued to deliver unforgettable performances, putting in weeks of preparation before stepping onto the cobblestones. Their creativity, confidence, and heart turned the Drag Derby into a true symbol of pride and perseverance. This event reminds us that joy, laughter, and community support can go hand in hand. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, the Drag Derby is a chance to celebrate identity, unity, and love in one of Vallarta’s most dazzling traditions.
